INCONEL® alloy 718 (UNS N07718/W.Nr. 2.4668) is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel chromium material used at -423° to 1300°F. Typical composition limits are shown in Table 1. The age-hardenable alloy can be readily fabricated, even into complex parts. Its welding characteristics, especially its resistance to postweld cracking, are outstanding. The ease and economy with which INCONEL alloy 718 can be fabricated, combined with good tensile, fatigue, creep, and rupture strength, have resulted in its use in a wide range of applications. Examples of these are components for liquid fueled rockets, rings, casings and various formed sheet metal parts for aircraft and land-based gas turbine engines, and cryogenic tankage. It is also used for fasteners and instrumentation parts.

FORGING APPLICATIONS

The alloy finds use in high temperature applications such as heat exchangers and gas turbine components. Because of its good corrosion resistance it is also used in wet scrubbers and some acid process equipment.

MACHINABILITY

May be machined by conventional means. However the alloy tends to work harden ahead of cutting and rigid tooling is essential to avoid chatter and work hardening in front of the tool edge.

FORMING

This alloy can be cold formed by conventional means and tooling. The alloy does work harden during cold working with an attendant increase in strength. This increase in strength may be of value for moderate temperature applications and, in these instances, the formed parts can be left in the cold work hardened condition.

HEAT TREATMENT

The alloy is furnished in the solution annealed condition. This is done at 2150 F for sufficient time dependent upon section thickness. Following the anneal the alloy may be air cooled.

FORGING

Hot forging can be done by heating the billet to 2100 – 2150 F, but not over 2150. Heavy forging may then be done down to a billet temperature of 1850 F and light forging down to 1700 F. Final reductions of 15 to 20% minimum are recommended to maintain.

ANNEALING

Because the alloy work hardens during hot or cold forming it may be necessary to anneal such parts in order to complete forming operations. Annealing is done at 1800 to 2000 F and air cooled. Stress relief of cold worked parts may be accomplished at 110.

INCONEL® (nickel-chromium-iron) alloy 600 (UNS N06600/W.Nr. 2.4816) is a standard engineering material for applications which require resistance to corrosion and heat. The alloy also has excellent mechanical properties and presents the desirable combination of high strength and good workability. The limiting chemical composition of INCONEL alloy 600 is shown in Table 1. The high nickel content gives the alloy resistance to corrosion by many organic and inorganic compounds and also makes it virtually immune to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking. Chromium confers resistance to sulfur compounds and also provides resistance to oxidizing conditions at high temperatures or in corrosive solutions. The alloy is not precipitation hardenable; it is hardened and strengthened only by cold work. The versatility of INCONEL alloy 600 has led to its use in a variety of applications involving temperatures from cryogenic to above 2000°F (1095°C). The alloy is used extensively in the chemical industry for its strength and corrosion resistance. Applications include heaters, stills, bubble towers and condensers for processing of fatty acids; evaporator tubes, tube sheets and flaking trays for the manufacture of sodium sulfide; and equipment for handling abietic acid in the manufacture of paper pulp. The alloy's strength and oxidation resistance at high temperatures make it useful for many applications in the heat-treating industry. It is used for retorts, muffles, roller hearths and other furnace components and for heat-treating baskets and trays. In the aeronautical field, INCONEL alloy 600 is used for a variety of engine and airframe components which must withstand high temperatures. Examples are lockwire, exhaust liners and turbine seals. INCONEL alloy 600 is used in the electronic field for such parts as cathode-ray tube spiders, thyratron grids, tube support members and springs. The alloy is a standard material of construction for nuclear reactors. It has excellent resistance to corrosion by high-purity water, and no indication of chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking in reactor water systems has been detected. For nuclear applications, the alloy is produced to exacting specifications and is designated INCONEL alloy 600T. Some physical constants of INCONEL alloy 600 are given in Table 2. Thermal properties at low and high temperatures are listed in Table 3. The modulus of elasticity in tension at various temperatures is shown in Table 4. Measurements of total hemispherical emissivity and total normal emissivity are shown in Table 5. The values for physical constants and thermal properties reported here are typical but are not suitable for specification use. Physical Constants and Thermal Properties Table 1 - Limiting

INCONEL® alloy 617 (UNS N06617/W.Nr. 2.4663a) is a solid-solution, strengthened, nickel-chromium-cobaltmolybdenum alloy with an exceptional combination of high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance. The alloy also has excellent resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments, and it is readily formed and welded by conventional techniques. The limiting chemical composition of INCONEL alloy 617 is listed in Table 1. The high nickel and chromium contents make the alloy resistant to a variety of both reducing and oxidizing media. The aluminum, in conjunction with the chromium, provides oxidation resistance at high temperatures. Solid-solution strengthening is imparted by the cobalt and molybdenum. The combination of high strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures over 1800°F (980°C) makes INCONEL alloy 617 an attractive material for such components as ducting, combustion cans, and transition liners in both aircraft and land-based gas turbines. Because of its resistance to high-temperature corrosion, the alloy is used for catalyst-grid supports in the production of nitric acid, for heat-treating baskets, and for reduction boats in the refining of molybdenum. INCONEL alloy 617 also offers attractive properties for components of power-generating plants, both fossilfueled and nuclear

INCONEL® alloy 690 (UNS N06690/W. Nr. 2.4642) is a high-chromium nickel alloy having excellent resistance to many corrosive aqueous media and hightemperature atmospheres. In addition to its corrosion resistance, alloy 690 has high strength, good metallurgical stability, and favorable fabrication characteristics. The chemical composition of INCONEL alloy 690 is listed in Table 1. The substantial chromium content gives the alloy outstanding resistance to oxidizing chemicals and to high-temperature oxidizing gases. The high level of nickel imparts resistance to stresscorrosion cracking in chloride-containing environments as well as to sodium hydroxide solutions. The properties of INCONEL alloy 690 are useful for various applications involving nitric or nitric/hydrofluoric acid solutions. Examples are tail-gas reheaters used in nitric acid production and heating coils and tanks for nitric/hydrofluoric solutions used in pickling of stainless steels and reprocessing of nuclear fuels. The alloy’s resistance to sulfur-containing gases makes it an attractive material for such applications as coal-gasification units, burners and ducts for processing sulfuric acid, furnaces for petrochemical processing, recuperators, incinerators, and glass vitrification equipment for radioactive waste disposal.
