INCONEL® alloy 718 (UNS N07718/W.Nr. 2.4668) is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel chromium material used at -423° to 1300°F. Typical composition limits are shown in Table 1. The age-hardenable alloy can be readily fabricated, even into complex parts. Its welding characteristics, especially its resistance to postweld cracking, are outstanding. The ease and economy with which INCONEL alloy 718 can be fabricated, combined with good tensile, fatigue, creep, and rupture strength, have resulted in its use in a wide range of applications. Examples of these are components for liquid fueled rockets, rings, casings and various formed sheet metal parts for aircraft and land-based gas turbine engines, and cryogenic tankage. It is also used for fasteners and instrumentation parts.

INCONEL® alloy X-750 (UNS N07750/W. Nr. 2.4669) is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium alloy used for its corrosion and oxidation resistance and high strength at temperatures to 1300°F. Although much of the effect of precipitation hardening is lost with increasing temperature over 1300°F, heat-treated material has useful strength up to 1800°F. Alloy X-750 also has excellent properties down to cryogenic termperatures. Composition is shown in Table 1. The economics of INCONEL alloy X-750 coupled with its availability in all standard mill forms has resulted in applications in a wide variety of industrial fields. In gas turbines, it is used for rotor blades and wheels, bolts, and other structural members. INCONEL alloy X-750 is used extensively in rocket-engine thrust chambers. Airframe applications include thrust reversers and hot-air ducting systems. Large pressure vessels are formed from INCONEL alloy X-750. Other applications are heat-treating fixtures, forming tools, extrusion dies, and test machine grips. For springs and fasteners, INCONEL alloy X-750 is used from sub-zero to 1200°F.

Inconel 601 is a general-purpose nickel-chromium-iron engineering material for applications where resistance to heat and corrosion is required. The alloy is very resistant to high-temperature oxidation – up to 2200 º F – and has good resistance to aqueous corrosion. The alloy retains good strength at elevated temperatures.

Alloy Inconel 601 was designed to withstand high temperature exposure and severe corrosive conditions. The alloy is not embrittled by long exposure to high temperatures, thanks to the nickel, chromium and aluminium contents that together form a protective and adherent oxide film.

APPLICATIONS

The heat resistance and corrosion resistance of Inconel 601 make it suitable for furnace parts in such operations as annealing, carburizing, nitriding and other heat-treatment operations. The alloy is used in chemical processing equipment and petrochemical processing equipment where its excellent corrosion resistance comes into full play. The alloy is also used in nitric acid production.

Further important applications of this alloy are to be found in the pollution control, aerospace – where it is used in jet-engine igniters – and power generation industries.

FORGING INCONEL 601

Inconel 601 is best forged, for large deformations, between 2250 and 1900 º F, but forging may be continued to 1650 º F. The alloy shows low ductility between 1600 and 1200 º F and should not be forged in this temperature range.

Designations and specifications of Inconel 601 forgings include DIN 17754 and ISO 7725.

HEAT TREATMENT

Inconel 601 cannot be hardened by heat treatment and only cold working will improve room-temperature strength.

The alloy is either annealed at around 2000 º F or solution treated at around 2100 º F, both followed by air cooling. In both cases the material must be cooled as rapidly as possible through the range 1400 to 1000 º F. Solution treating is the treatment normally applied to Inconel 601 parts involving exposure to temperatures of 1000 º F and higher, annealing to parts exposed to temperatures below 1000 º F.

INCONEL® alloy 690 (UNS N06690/W. Nr. 2.4642) is a high-chromium nickel alloy having excellent resistance to many corrosive aqueous media and hightemperature atmospheres. In addition to its corrosion resistance, alloy 690 has high strength, good metallurgical stability, and favorable fabrication characteristics. The chemical composition of INCONEL alloy 690 is listed in Table 1. The substantial chromium content gives the alloy outstanding resistance to oxidizing chemicals and to high-temperature oxidizing gases. The high level of nickel imparts resistance to stresscorrosion cracking in chloride-containing environments as well as to sodium hydroxide solutions. The properties of INCONEL alloy 690 are useful for various applications involving nitric or nitric/hydrofluoric acid solutions. Examples are tail-gas reheaters used in nitric acid production and heating coils and tanks for nitric/hydrofluoric solutions used in pickling of stainless steels and reprocessing of nuclear fuels. The alloy’s resistance to sulfur-containing gases makes it an attractive material for such applications as coal-gasification units, burners and ducts for processing sulfuric acid, furnaces for petrochemical processing, recuperators, incinerators, and glass vitrification equipment for radioactive waste disposal. In various types of high-temperature water, alloy 690 displays low corrosion rates and excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. Thus, alloy 690 is widely used for steam generator tubes, baffles, tubesheets, and hardware in nuclear power generation.
